With the recent quake1 source code release, I have decided that my time would be better spent on improving the security of the QuakeWorld protocol, instead of working on this site. I am not concerned about TFC, since Valve/TFS fix problems in it and the Half-Life engine. My primary concern has always been TF1 here, since it is no longer actively developed or fixed for problems. Until recently, quakeworld also was no longer actively developed. With the release of the QuakeWorld source code, there is going to be a lot of cheating until the protocol can become more secure (I've seen one already with an hwguy at 5x scout speed or so).
Therefore, I will no longer be actively updating this site anymore. I want to thank all of you who sent information that became part of the guide or was useful in work I did to develop the qwsp cheat detection proxy, the release of which was pre-empted by time constraints and the Quake1 source code release. For the brief time (5 months) that this site has been open, it has been a pleasure maintaining it.
When I opened the site, I opened it under the name Killer Bunny for a fear of a backlash from the zealot anti-cheaters who have always strongly held to the doctrine of security by obscurity, that is: "If no one knows it's possible, it won't happen." Well this has always been plain wrong in my opinion. There has always been cheaters, and cheating is passed from friend to friend and on the many sites that exist. I deplore the actions of those who did things such as post personal information and pictures on their websites, almost encouraging someone to take a shot. I won't name names or sites, but those who saw it know what I'm talking about. Quake and Team Fortress are games--those who cannot see past that need psychiatric help.
I have signed on to the mailing lists for quake.sourceforge.net and the Quake Standards Group (as long as it lasts). I hope that there it will be possible to contribute more than maintaining a website that is now obsolete can do. I can be found under my (real name) of Conan Ford (email: conanford at yahoo.com) there. If you see me on the pub servers, I play by Barbarian.
Happy new year (and new millenium for those that don't realise there is no "0" year), and I hope the lameness being seen now in TF1 will soon no longer be possible.
Signing off,
Killer Bunny a.k.a. Barbarian
